Starcruiser Fanfare (2014) is an energetic fanfare for developing band. It is designed to be engaging to the audience, yet educational for the performers.
The inspiration to Starcruiser Fanfare comes from Michael Giacchino's score to the 2009 Star Trek motion picture. I wanted to create a work for young band that captured the cinematic excitement present in Giacchino's riveting soundtrack.
The composition begins with an introductory fanfare, followed by a quick percussion interlude to start things off. The main theme shifts around from the trumpets accompanied by brass, to clarinets accompanied by woodwinds, and finally to low voices accompanied by everyone else. Just as you get settled in, a slow melodic theme appears in the upper woodwinds. After that brief statement, the main melody motive is presented in an altered fanfare form that builds to another percussion interlude. The main theme reappears full-force before a recap of the opening fanfare ends the tune like it started.
Difficulty: Young Band (Grade 2)
Instrumentation: Small Band (Fl, Ob, Ba, 2 Cl, BCl, As, Ts, Bs, 2 Tr, Hr, Tb, Eu, Tu, Timpani, Glock, Xylo, Chimes, Snare, Bass drum, Suspended/Crash Cymbals, and Triangle)
Time: 3 minutes, 30 seconds
