Moderately Heroic; Slightly Adventurous, for Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble (2008) began as quartet. At the request of Dr. Dennis AsKew, I expanded the work into an octet for performance by the UNCG TubaBand at the 2008 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. My aim in creating this work was to present an ever-shifting landscape of diverse rhythms, tonalities, and styles.
The work opens up in a lively 7/8 fanfare that crescendos to the first melodic theme of the work. The rhythmic motive of the introduction is developed throughout the rest of the work. Many meters and tonal centers are explored as we go on an adventure with the rhythmic and melodic motives from the introduction.
