Adagietto, for Tuba/Euphonium ensemble (2007) represents an attempt to capture the great sonority and lyrical capabilities of tubas and euphoniums. I composed this work for tuba octet with a choral style in mind. This composition explores different tonal centers and timbres while weaving melodic lines throughout the ensemble.
The composition begins with the main theme presented in a euphonium chorale that mutates into performance by the full ensemble. The work then modulates into the relative minor and builds to a tense climax. After a solo tuba cadenza, the work starts again with a more optimistic and heroic character, ultimately crescendoing to a loud majestic statement. The opening chorale appears again, this time orchestrated for the tubas. The minor theme makes a reappearance, but ultimately fades back into the major tonality as the work concludes.
