Pedal to the Metal (2009) is a virtuosic joyride for Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble. From the initial "Gun it!" start to the bombastic finish, Pedal to the Metal is a rollercoaster of screaming high notes, blasting pedal tones, and blazing 16th-note runs.
The work is organized in a modified sonata form, based on a heroic and majestic "A theme" that is contrasted with a grungy heavy "metal" "B theme." Recurring motives throughout the work give it a sense of continuity as you send the audience down this wild ride.
Pedal to the Metal was premiered by the tubists of the Iota Epsilon chapter of Phi Mu Alpha in Spring 2010. The work has since been performed by the US Armed Forces Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble at the 2012 USABTEW.
